St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend - December 3, 2011

I am thrilled to tell you all about my very first experience running a 1/2 Marathon!

--A little "history"of my running: I've been a runner really all of my life. Haven't we all, really?? Didn't we all run around as kids? Playing chase with other kids, running after the family dog, running away from the family dog, running after the Ice Cream truck driving through the neighborhood, running to catch the bus, running in gym class, running the bases around the baseball diamond, etc., etc., etc., the list goes on!

Anyway, I really started running (for more than the above reasons) when I was in 7th grade. I decided to try out track in middle school. I only did short distance like 100m, 200m, and the 400m. I did okay. I wasn't fast but didn't try for anything more than a 1/4 mile! The next year, 8th grade, I decided to try out Cross Country. I went from 1/4 mile on a flat oval track to 1 1/2 miles through the woods on uneven surfaces! I WAS IN LOVE. I finished 3rd in the County Championship that year.

I wasn't always a social butterfly growing up. And when it came to going to High School, I was scared out of my mind! I was scared to run Cross Country because there were a lot of girls, a lot older than me, and it intimidated me. I didn't show up to the first practice. My "new" coach was a little upset because he not only expected me but he was excited about the prospect. My "old" coach called me and asked why I didn't go. After a few encouraging words, I went to the next practice. Again, I WAS IN LOVE. This time it was 3.1 miles.
We had a "run off" to determine the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. I was a freshman, and I made the Varsity team...even if I was the 7th and final girl to make the team!

And even better than just being the first Freshman girl in my HS to make the Varsity CC team? We won our first ever State Championship that year. It was November 1993....a very blistery and cold day, but we didn't feel it through all of the excitement and cheer!

Anyway, I ran all 4 years of HS and was in the top 2-3 my sophomore through senior years.

I took a long break through college...mostly because I think I was burned out. I ran a lot in middle school and high school because I ran both CC and track. I usually ran 6 days a week throughout most of the year. I only ran for exercise while in college. Then I went to graduate school and I gained about 10 lbs...weighing the most I'd ever weighed in my life.

I decided to start running again. And it felt soooo good to slip on those running shorts and shoes and take off down the street. Not to bore with lots of details but I've been running continuously now since 2003 (mid-way through 2003 when I was in my 1st year of graduate school). I even got my Hubby into running and he lost a lot of weight! He doesn't like running like I do, but he knows it works for getting into and keeping in shape!

I've ran lots of 5Ks, 5Ms, and 10Ks. And then I got the itch. Just half of an itch though. Not a full out itch. And, my first way to "satisfy the itch" was to register for the "Most Meaningful Race You'll Ever Run", St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend! What better way to be inspired to put in all of the training hours and miles and sweat than to run for the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital? There is no better way.

I started in the middle of Corral #5 based on my projected pace and finish time.

Quite the inspirational message on our side of the start line huh?

The race was on Saturday, December 3rd in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. What a wonderful place to run. There are so many landmarks and inspirational reasons to run. The course involves capturing a glorious view of the Mississippi River as you run down Riverside Drive. Then, you take a climb up onto historical Beale Street where throngs of people await you and cheer you on. Then....you make your way to the campus of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. You see precious little children with masks covering they're fragile faces while their parents are cheering you on, thanking you for running for their sick children. If this doesn't reinforce why you are running, and put a lump in your throat, I don't know what will. I was smiling ear to ear while tears streamed down my face. This was a moment I'll never forget, and will keep close to my heart, always.

You then move on to a long stretch of highway lined with trees. A pretty area to run, but the long stretch can mess with your mind. But, the masses of people are still out there, cheering you on. And what really moved me along was seeing all of the TEAM JAKE affiliated signs. A team I PROUDLY ran for in honor of Don and Staci's son, Jake Owen, who died at the age of 4 from a rare liver cancer. Precious Jake was diagnosed at the tiny age of 2 and he fought and he fought and he fought through numerous treatments, surgeries, and other operations until he earned his Angel Wings in October 2006.

Every sign I saw, I tried to give a "high-5". It was like I gathered some of Jake's spirit and he helped me along. I felt his presence all around me.

You continue through Overland Park which is about mile 9-9 1/2. The home stretch is along Poplar Drive, a rolling 3 miles leading you back to the downtown area. At Sun Studios, which is 12 1/2 miles, the marathoners split off as they've just about reached halfway, and half-marathoners head for home! A downward finish into AutoZone Park as you are greeted by friends and family sitting in the stands can't be sweeter!

What a victory! My goal finish time for my first 1/2 marathon was 2 hours to 2:05. Well, I didn't just barely make my goal, I shattered my goal! My finish time was 1:51:51 with an average of an 8:33 pace per mile! Yes, I was SMOKIN! This year was the first year that spectators, friends and family (and those back home) could track runners by either their name or their bib number. My Hubby tracked me half way through and saw how fast I was going and said he was really worried I was going to burn out. I didn't. I held strong. I had a goal. I had a reason. I believed. I ran for Jake!

Some other quick info: This year has been a very GOOD running year. Not only have I really toned and conditioned my body, I've also lost about 8 pounds.
And, here are some notable race results!

Run to the Cross 10K -2nd place in Age Group - 52:39 (PR)
Bark in the Park 5K - 1st place in Age Group - 24:40 (I can't remember my finish times in HS but this is a PR since HS!)
Big Dog Ultra Trail Run 5Mile - 1st place overall female finisher! 46:16 (PR)
St. Jude 1/2 Marathon 13.1Miles - finished in top 10% of all categories (Overall finisher, female finisher and age class finisher) - 1:51:51 (PR)

Organizing Ideas!

So, my friend Erin is a Professional Organizer and she has given me so many ideas for how to organize my stuff. She has actually come into my house and helped me organize our master closet!! I can't tell you how much of a dramatic change it was, and for the good!

I want to share one of the ideas she gave me for organizing things such as jeans...which when hung can take up a LOT of space. Denim is something that can actually withstand long periods of being folded, unlike many other types of materials.

This is really called a sweater organizer. It comes in 3 "cubes" (as shown below) and also in a larger 6 "cube" size. It really just depends on where you will hang the organizer as to which length you will want, and also how much you want to put in them. I chose two 3 "cube" ones because they are hanging on the bottom rail of my closet.

Here are how my jeans are now living in my closet :)

Something else I really needed to get organized was my long necklaces. I don't have one of those large "on the floor" jewelry boxes. I only have a small one that sits on my chest of drawers. I have this small mirror that sits on my dresser that has little "knobs" on either side to allow the mirror to tilt. I had been "draping" my necklaces onto those and what a mess it was becoming!!

This is how I solved the "tangled necklace" syndrome. I found this organizer that is said to be for neck ties and/or belts. I found it to be PERFECT for hanging my long necklaces on! You just hang it on the wall :) What do you think? I might need to get another one soon!

YAY! I ♥ October!

Happy Monday! It's October, and I'm loving it. My favorite months are October, November and December...probably in that order! I LOVE Fall. It's my absolute favorite time of year. I grew up in the mountains of northern West Virginia where fall foliage is in abundance. I just love the crisp autumn air. I now, however, live in the deep south, Louisiana. There really isn't much of a fall here. It's extremely hot in the summers, and then it alternates between cooler days, and warm days until winter. Our winters here are cold and rainy. I do enjoy the few days we have that feel like "fall" but it definitely makes me home sick for the mountains, family, and good ole' times growing up!

WOW, so Hawai'i was EVERY BIT worth the $$. Seriously...from the yummy FRESH pineapple to the organically grown 100% Kona coffee, to the breathtaking scenic views, to the wonderful family time shared.

If you've NOT yet visited the great state of Hawai'i, please put it on your "bucket list". Hubby and I are already planning to go back one day and visit Kaua'i and Mau'i. We mainly stayed in Honolulu on O'ahu, and we visited the big island of Hawai'i for a couple of days.

My New Love ♥ Nutella Ice Cream

WOW WOW WOW...I have gone straight to Heaven...all because of a little jar of chocolate hazelnut spread.

This is honestly one of my all time favorite ice creams, and it's homemade! Want the recipe??

Nutella Ice Cream

Ingredients:
1 small jar Nutella (found next to Peanut Butter in grocery store)
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1 1/4 WHOLE milk, not 2%, not 1% and certainly not Skim!
2 c. Heavy whipping cream (not half and half)
1 1/2 t. vanilla extract

Start by placing the Nutella and sugar in your stand mixer (if you don't have one I'm sure a hand mixer will work but pretty certain the stand mixer is best!) and combine.

After mixed well, add in the milk, SLOWLY and a little at a time....to avoid wearing ALL of it...you'll probably still wear some of it. :)
Mix on LOW speed until sugar is dissolved; about 2 minutes.

Stir in heavy cream and vanilla and mix well.

Pour into your ice cream maker and churn for 25-35 minutes.

The ice cream will be "soft serve" consistency and is fine to eat now (though I find it hard to NOT eat a few spoonfuls at this point). Put into freezer safe containers and finish in the freezer.

*Drizzle with additional Nutella if you like before sticking into the freezer.

*Note, I had a little Nutella left in another jar and thought I would make a "sauce" to drizzle into the ice cream just before it was finished. Well, it wouldn't melt on the stove top...it actually started to seize up. So, I placed it into a microwave safe glass dish and added some of the whole milk I had left (I actually just purchased one of those single servings like you find at a convenient store as we don't drink the "red cap"!). Place into microwave and heat for about 30 seconds and then carefully stir it. It WILL BE HOT. Microwave for another 20-30 seconds if not completely "saucy".

Here is a new treat I tried out. Banana Carob Chip Pupcakes!
Needless to say, Chloe LOVES them :)

(Ok, I have NO idea what is wrong with Blogger on my end...my pictures are now uploading vertically instead of horizontally...even though they don't open like this on my computer.)

What you need:
2 Cups Water
2 Ripe Bananas
3 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1 Egg
3 Tablespoons Honey
1/2 - 3/4 Cup Carob Chips (can be found in health food stores. DO NOT use Chocolate Chips as these are NOT healthy for our furbabies)

Mash the bananas in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Stir in Carob Chips.

Lightly spray muffin pans with cooking spray. I personally like the mini muffin pans for my Pug, but by all means use a regular sized muffin pan if you have larger dogs.

Bake about 15 minutes if using the mini muffin pans, 20 minutes for regular muffin pans, or until toothpick comes out clean.

Again, not sure what is going on with my pictures once they are uploaded :(
But here is a picture of one of the muffins torn open...look at the gooey carob!

You know, I even tried one...and they aren't bad! Not as tasty as a regular chocolate chip muffin by any means, but they sure are healthier!

Chicken & Broccoli Cheesy Braid

Fancy dinners don't have to be difficult to make!
Take this very pretty "Braid" for instance...it's totally "Semi-Homemade".

Start with:
2 cups cooked chicken breast, chopped
1 cup chopped broccoli
1/2 cup red bell pepper, chopped
1 garlic clove, pressed
4 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or your favorite shredded cheese but go with one that has good flavor)
1/2 cup low fat mayonnaise
1 1 1/2 teaspoons of your favorite seasoning
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 packages (8 oz each) reduced fat refrigerated crescent rolls
1 egg white, lightly beaten
Optional: 2 tablespoons slivered almonds

Make:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine chicken, broccoli, and bell pepper in mixing bowl. Add pressed garlic and shredded cheese and mix. Add mayonnaise, seasoning, and salt then mix well.

Unroll crescent rolls but do not separate. Place both packages of rolls on a baking stone or cookie sheet end to end. Press ends together to form one long sheet of dough. Press all seams together so filling will not leak out. Along outer side of dough, along each of two opposite sides, cut 2 inch strips from end toward center. This will look like fringe along the two longer sides of the dough.

Add filling down the center between the strips. Using an ice cream scooper works really well. To braid, lift strips of dough, one at a time, across mixture to meet in center, twisting each strip one turn. Continue alternating strips to form a braid. Tuck ends up to seal at end of braid. Brush with egg white. Sprinkle with almonds.

Bake 25-28 minutes or until deep golden brown. Makes about 10 servings.

Enjoy! You can totally change it up by using turkey or other meats...or, go just veggies!!

♥ LOVE ♥ Running Skirts!

No longer are girls restricted to plain ole gym shorts and a tee shirt! You can still be a dressed up "Diva" while exercising!! I discovered these awesome Running Skirts (yes, I said SKIRT) from my friend Melissa while running a race last fall. She swore by them, and suggested I try them.

Boy am I glad I did! They're so comfortable to run in. Although running shorts have really changed over the last few years, they still tend to 'ride up' and bunch up between the legs. Running skirts don't do that! They stay in place, and there is nothing to bunch up! You generally have the option of attached briefs, compression shorts, capri tights, or even full length tights for colder running environments/months.

I pprefer the skirt with attached briefs. Wearing these are effortless!! And, not to mention, these running skirts are super cute as there are many colors/designs to choose from.

There are many companies making these running skirts, including Adidas, Nike, Under Armor, etc. I personally love Running Skirts brand. This company is based out of California, and they really up the competition with their super cute designs.

I thought it was fun that the latest issue of Runner's World (August 2011) featured a Running Skirt on the cover...and what was more fun? I actually have the EXACT running skirt :) Oh, and even more fun than that?? It's the 1/2 Marathon issue...full of training tips and advice and workouts. I'm running my very first 1/2 this year :)

4 Months Out!

Yay!!! Though I've BEEN running and working out continuously since January 2, 2011, it's just about time to REALLY hit it hard in preparation for my FIRST 1/2 Marathon! And, what better race to run than the very meaningful St. Jude 1/2 Marathon! I am running as part of the (currently) 84 member- Team Jake. Our goal is 100 Team Jakers and $100,000 for St. Jude!This is little Jake Owen Raborn, during his fight. You can read more about Jake and his foundation by visiting my personal fundraising page.

I am currently at $1,050 and my original goal was $1,000!! Thanks to EVERYONE who was so kind and generous to help me reach my goal, and surpass it! As you are reading this blog post, Hubby and I are up in the air...making our way to Honolulu for 9 1/2 days!!! What a dream vacation. We have always wanted to go to Hawaii but we didn't think we would be doing so this young! Figured this would be a retirement vacation. LOL!

Thanks to my Sister-in-Law who is living in Japan. Her husband is stationed just south of Tokyo with the U.S. Navy. Hawaii is halfway between Japan, and home. The whole family is getting together and it's going to be an amazing vacation!!

Update: New Torte Flavor!

♥ Raspberry Cream Torte ♥

So, I posted my Orange Dream Torte a couple of weeks ago. I decided to play around with the recipe and make a Raspberry/Berry Torte :) My Regional Manager at my work LOVES anything raspberry and with him celebrating his birthday on July 30, I decided to make him a Raspberry Torte.

The original recipe called for a basic yellow cake in which you fix up with melted orange sherbet and orange zest. I decided to go for a strawberry cake mix (b/c I can't find a raspberry one and at least it's still a red berry!) and I added melted raspberry sorbet (again, couldn't find raspberry sherbet but the sorbet is better!). YUM!!!

Next the filling was made with melted raspberry sorbet instead of the orange sherbet. DELICIOUS!

Finally the cake was topped with fresh red raspberries. A HIT!

I'm sure I'll try more options...and I'll be sure to come back here and let you know what I did!

Meat Substitute

Ok, so, I'm on this new "thing" where I'm trying to stay away from livestock/farm-raised/processed meats. Not only is it (mostly) inhumane how these animals are raised (if you can call an 8 week old chicken, raised), but also very unhealthy.

Farm raised meats contain high amounts of growth hormones, steroids, antibiotics, and even pesticides - the sort of things that can give cancer a start and encourage it to grow out of control. Believe it or not, chicken is the worst. It is pumped so full of chemicals and hormones that it's unbelievable. Is it any wonder that the rate of cancer in the United States is one of the highest in the world? It's because of all the unnatural stuff in our food, mainly meat and dairy products.

So, with that being said, I'm trying to stick to just wild game and fish/seafood. This really isn't much of a problem for me b/c I love wild game and seafood. Chicken actually does gross me out unless I'm cooking it at home. Have you ever bitten into a chunk of chicken only to have your teeth bounce right off of a nasty gristle?? It's probably one of the most disgusting things while eating. Oh, and not to mention I've been to a chicken processing plant. Absolutely disgusting, and sad, all at the same time.

Let's get back to being positive, shall we! I LOVE portabella mushrooms. Actually, I love all mushrooms!! LOL! I like to take those big grilling portabellas and fixing them up.
First, take your mushrooms and turn them over, and remove most of the black gills. The gills aren't really that tasty, and it gives you room to fill them :)

I like to quickly saute the mushrooms in a touch of butter and olive oil to get them going.

Next, saute a slice of onion for each mushroom in some butter and EVOO. Place the sauteed onion in the mushroom cap and squeeze some fresh garlic over it. Drizzle with Balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top, and finish with your favorite seasoning blend (I like the Cavender's Greek Seasoning).

Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until tender with a fork (depends on thickness of mushrooms) about 365 degrees. Not sure why my picture is vertical! Haha!! But, you see the finished product :)

Chloe's 5th Birthday Pawty!

I know...this is VERY late...but I just had to share some pictures. Chloe turned 5 back on St. Patty's day. I wanted to do a Pawty and boy was it a success! Complete with custom made cupcake toppers and invites!

Mmmm...Lemon Chicken Piccata

I love just about anything with lemon in it...sweet or savory!

I found this recipe in the Spring 2011 edition of Food & Family by Kraft Foods. It's very easy to make, and fairly healthy. I highly recommend making it if you need a chicken pick-me-up!

You will need:
2-3 large lemons, divided
4 chicken breasts
1/4 cup (or a large dollop) Kraft Reduced Fat Mayo with Olive Oil
22 Ritz crackers, finally crushed (about a cup....I didn't have Ritz so I used the Multi-grain Club crackers...just as good and maybe a little healthier!)
2 T Olive Oil
2 t chopped fresh parsley
1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth
1 T butter

~Cut 4 thin lemon slices from one lemon and put aside. Squeeze juice from remaining lemons.
~Coat chicken with mayo, then dredge in cracker crumbs.

~Heat olive oil in large skillet on medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook 5 minutes. Turn chicken and cook on medium heat for 5 minutes or until chicken is golden brown on both sides and done (165-degrees). Transfer chicken to platter; sprinkle with parsley. Cover with foil to keep warm.

~Carefully wipe any crumbs from skillet with paper towel.
~Add lemon juice and chicken broth to skillet. Cook on medium-high heat 6 to 8 minutes or until slightly reduced, stirring occasionally. Add butter and lemon slices. Cook and stir on low heat 3 to 4 minutes or until butter is melted and lemons are heated through.

~~Serve over chicken with a bed of angel hair pasta (or your favorite pasta)!! DELISH!!

This month, starting on July 15th, the Etsy Angels will be raising money for LFMB. LFMB has done so much already for so many families and they need our help! Make a purchase from any of the stores listed below and a portion of their total sales will be donated directly to LFMB to help them do what they do best....support parents with children that have Malacia.

Can you possibly imagine having a baby and knowing something is wrong and no one seems to know what? That is sometimes what it is like when you have a baby with Malacia. Malacia is described as: "Airways carry air from the nose to the lungs. Some children are born with airways that are too soft. Soft airways do not hold their shape, and air does not flow through as well as it should. There are three places where airways can be soft: the voice box, the windpipe, and the breathing tubes. A person may have softening in one, two or three parts of the airway. This softening is called Malacia."

From the founder of LFMB, LeeAnna, "Almost 2 years ago we created a support group on Facebook, while we were living in the hospital with our youngest son. The group has been such a great support for over 200 people. With the support group we have reached 3 different country's and just about every state in the United States. With so little support found elsewhere we decided to take it a step further. In March of 2011 "Love For Malacia Babies" received their EIN and prepared to file for non profit status. LFMB will one day be able to help families who have Malacia babies. There are so many things we would love to be able to do."

Kashi vs. Kellogg's Mini Wheats

So...this seems to be an odd topic for a blog post huh?

I LOVE the Strawberry Frosted Mini Wheats by Kellogg's but I was certain that they were not the healthiest choice b/c of all the sugar "frosting"! They are especially good with fresh sliced strawberries or even fresh blueberries.

I found these Cinnamon Harvest mini wheats by Kashi (I LOVE Kashi products) and they are DIVINE! They actually remind me of those Quaker Cinnamon Oatmeal Squares which I too love!
However, after scanning the nutrition information (I currently have both at home right now), there is LITTLE difference. You can actually eat 4 more 'biscuits' of Kashi as the serving size is 28 biscuits to the 24 biscuits of Kellogg's. Oh, and you get a little more protein from the Kashi. The calories and fat and sodium, etc., were all comparable.

So...with this being said...I no longer feel 'guilty' eating the frosted mini wheats...I could be eating something worse like Lucky Charms...I do love those though!!

Been WAY too Long...Bare with Me!

Yes, Yes, Yes...I know...I've not had a blog post since like February 1, 2011! WHAT is wrong with me!!! Where have I been!

I think I burned out b/c my blog was entitled "Chloe Boutique- Handmade artisan jewelry from the Bayou" and that limited my blog posts to things revolving around jewelry, online selling Venues, other artists, etc. So, I've decided to change my blog title to encompass everything important in my life... This includes, but NOT LIMITED TO, my handmade artisan jewelry, other artisans, my running life and inspirations/goals, travel tips/advice/experiences, friends, FOOD including my favorites and recipes, etc.

So...my first post will be just a lackadaisical one...about THIS & THAT!

♥ I've been back into running and exercising, hardcore. I started my new "regime" on January 2. I tend to get burned out by doing the same thing OVER AND OVER or just allowing my brain to talk my body out of it. I have found it's MUCH easier (and rewarding) to do my workouts during lunch. This has just become part of my normal work day...and I stick to it b/c it's during my lunch...and I'm not cutting into "ME" time after work which is used for cooking dinner, doing a few house chores, and spending time with Hubby and Chloe.

Though I wish it were a touch more (ok, a lot more), I've logged 223 miles since January 2. My workouts during lunch are limited because of time. I can only run about 3-3.25 miles during lunch. So, I typically run 2 days a week, and then do some other type of cardio for a short time (elliptical, stair stepper) and also incorporate some weight lifting the other 2 days (I work 4 10-hour days). During the "cooler" months (this is funny being that I live in Louisiana and "cooler" often refers to temps below 90 degrees) I can get in some good LONG runs outside on weekends. I just can't (I am NOT trying to be pessimistic...just realistic) run outside during the summer here! However, during the summer, I'm still confined to the dreaded treadmill. My "long" weekend runs are usually only 4-5 miles during the summer...on the treadmill.

♥ So...my current goal? I'll be running my FIRST Half Marathon on Saturday, December 3 -- ST. JUDE! Yes, this seems pretty far off, but with it already being halfway through July, December will be here in a blink. Though I'm not officially training for the 1/2 right now, I'm in great shape b/c I continue to run 6-12 miles a week (that doesn't sound so good now that I "see" it written). I'll begin my real training as soon as it "cools", or at least by mid September...whichever happens first! LOL!!!

How rewarding, though, will it be to know you ran FOR THE CHILDREN of St. Jude? I'm stoked :)

Just after Christmas 2009, police in the Town of Sterlington rescued a small kitten that had been purposely burned. The kitten was fostered and then adopted by LOVE – as in Erin Sharplin Love, a certified wedding planner and professional organizer from West Monroe, Louisiana. Erin and her parents have been involved with animal rescue and welfare for many years. They are actively involved with PAWS of Northeast Louisiana and also an organization founded by Love’s parents, ORVAL (Ouachita River Valley Animal League).

Not long after Burnie was rescued...

Burnie, formerly known as Ember, now lives with a family of other rescued pets at the shop where Love works. He has a friendly and outgoing personality, and brings LOVE to his surroundings. He has made a full recovery! You think he likes his home??

Caramel Twist Lampwork Glass Necklace

Artisan lampwork glass bead is uniquely created as an uneven twist with swirls of blue, green and burgundy with a soft caramel brown. The bead has been wire-wrapped with 14kt. gold-filled wire and drops from a hammered brass circle. The pendant then hangs on antiqued bronze figure-8 chain. Necklace is finished with an antiqued bronze toggle clasp.

Pendant hangs approximately 5.5 cm. or 2 inches. Necklace length is approximately 16.5 inches.

A large, faceted smoky quartz cabochon has been set into a gorgeous sterling silver setting creating a fabulous focal for this necklace. The pendant measures a large 6 mm. or 2 1/2 inches! Micro-faceted snakeskin jasper "disco-ball" beads are spaced by Bali silver and Karen Hill Tribe silver. Varying sizes of faceted smoky quartz round stones surround the pendant on the necklace.

Dangle earrings were created using 3 uniform colored pieces of jasper which have been individually attached to each other with sterling silver wire. The earrings dangle approximately 5 cm. or 2 inches from sterling silver ear wires.

*Turn all your clothing hangers the "wrong way". When you wear something and put it back, turn it the right way. After a year, donate/sell everything still facing the "wrong way."

*Use a Laundry Sorter for your family, but not for colors--for PEOPLE! Then when you do laundry you know an entire load belongs to one person!

Fabulous Friday Finds and Favorites!!!

Ok, so this is not my traditional "Fabulous Friday Finds and Favorites" kind of post, but, it's my blog, and this is my favorite :)

Not only is it Saints Football time...it's WVU Football too! Yeah, I know, I live in Louisiana, but I am NOT an LSU Fan, at all. I'm a born and raised West Virginia Native, and a 2002 Alumni of West Virginia University. I bleed Old Gold and Blue!
We will be headed to Baton Rouge to see them take on the Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Not sure how much of a contest this will be but had we played them a couple years ago, I know WVU would have given LSU a run for their money. All of the write-ups for the game are giving the Mountaineers good signs...we shall see!! I'm just not looking forward to being joshed the entire time I'm walking around LSU campus being called "Tiger Bait" by children and old people. LOL!

Let's GOOOOOO Mountaineers!

Networking & Mastermind Meeting #3

Our third "Women Entrepreneurs" meeting was held Wednesday night, September 15th, at Bayou Bistro!

In attendance was: Erin , Amanda , Olivia , Elisabeth, Victoria, Cindy, and a new lady to join us, Meg!

Introduction for Meg!
~ Meg is a news reporter for KNOE, Channel 8. She is originally from Charlotte, N.C. (my dream destination to live!). After finishing college, she landed a job in Montgomery, AL where she then found a lead on a reporting position at KNOE here in Monroe.
Meg is part of an organization group for Young Professionals in the area. She describes this group as a social and networking group all in one. She is currently working on an event set for October 7th which will recognize the Top 20 Under 40 Professionals as selected by Delta Business.

We discussed our goals set from our last meeting (August 18).

~ Erin has been busy writing articles for her magazine, Panache. She plans to have her magazine in our hands October 10th! Be sure to look for her updated, classy magazine :)
She is also looking for any of the following for her Little Green Boutique & Salon: Nail technician, massage therapist, hair stylist. If you or someone you know would like to have their own space, contact me and I'll get you in touch with Erin!

~ Olivia has been working on removing old wallpaper, and painting! She still has a little bit to go, but hopes to have it completed by the Holidays! She's also recently joined Weight Watchers and hopes to shed a few pounds by our next meeting!

~ Elisabeth's desk is on its way to being organized! During tonight's meeting, she showed us pictures of her progress! She hopes to have it completed by our next meeting! She is also organizing a training program for new Take Shape for Life Coaches. She's also working on pushing up the volume of front line coaches, and wants to sponsor two of them :)

~ Victoria was "victorious" with her goals set for September! She found a new place to live and she's moved to Structural Awareness Center as the new Massage Therapist! She has also had at least one Scentsy party to help with her expenses for her Thailand trip!
She wants to decide on her treatments and rituals she would like to focus on in her Aesthetician Program.

~ Cindy has been listening to her affirmations before going to bed! She's also booking "new faces" for Mary Kay and continues to look for "new faces"! Should you be interested in purchasing Mary Kay and you don't have a local sales rep, contact me and I'll get you in touch with her. And, better yet, if you are looking for a way to earn extra cash and run your own business, she can help you with that as well.
She plans to hire Erin, who is a fashion consultant, to help her find her "Signature" style!

~ Amanda has created a jewelry portfolio for To-Be Brides looking for custom jewelry for their Big Day! This will allow them to browse through pieces previously made. She has also been very busy with her blog; posting 3-4 days a week! She wants to keep this up and gain more viewers and followers. She's also working hard on creating lots of jewelry as she has 3 shows coming up in October!

~ Meg has just joined us so she has her initial goals set...she hopes that the Young Professionals Event is very successful! She's working on getting in touch with people for the event.

*So, what drives women entrepreneurs? I found this little chart :) Do you fall in this category? If so, maybe it's time to do something about it!

Time to show off my new finds and favorites :)

I'm not one to collect all of these different scents of perfume...I tend to find a perfume/spray that I like and I use it for years...yes, YEARS! Remembering back through the perfumes, I remember using Sunflowers and Jovan White Musk as a "Middle School and Junior High" age. I then moved to Calvin Klein CK One and Elizabeth Arden's 5th Avenue in High School and into College. Clinique Happy sparked my interest next and I wore it all the way through College and Graduate School. When Bath & Body Works' Japanese Cherry Blossom came out, I was in love! It was light and airy with soothing floral notes. I used both the body splash and the perfume for about 5 years...up until this past spring when I discovered Calvin Klein's new version of Eternity; Eternity Summer. I'm totally loving it!! It's definitely a summery scent so I'll only wear it till fall....then back to Japanese Cherry Blossom!
Ok, so this is certainly not a new find, but definitely a favorite find I want to share!! My friend Lisa used to make these scrumptious doggie treats that my Chloe LOVES!! Lisa shared her family recipe with me so that I could make them for an event in a couple of weeks. I'll be helping to raise money for a local charitable organization. This organization, Ouachita River Valley Animal League (ORVAL) helps new pet owners with expenses for spaying/neutering and other medical expenses in which the new pet owners might not be able to cover. This organization helps keep the new pets in their new home rather than being brought back to the shelter.

Dinner Solution Thursday!

Need a fast side for dinner tonight?

Boy do I have a yummy one...great for summer too!!

Pasta Caprese

Ingredients:

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 shallot, minced
1 small clove garlic, minced
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
2 pounds mixed heirloom tomatoes, cored, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 pound pasta, such as campanelle, penne or fusilli
12 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese , cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Directions:

Whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, shallot and garlic in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add sugar, if desired (depending on the sweetness of your tomatoes). Add the tomatoes and gently toss. Marinate at room temperature, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook as the label directs. Drain in a colander and run under cold water to stop the cooking.

Add the pasta and mozzarella to the tomato mixture and toss. Stir in the basil and lemon zest, and season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate, tossing occasionally, until serving.

Five years ago New Orleans, and the rest of the Gulf Coast, was devastated by the ever powerful Hurricane Katrina. This was the biggest disaster in the State's history. People scrambled to get out of town, but some were not able to leave. So many lost their homes, lost their businesses, lost their ways of life. Today, New Orleans has rebuilt and become a stronger city. God Bless Louisiana and the people who live here.

Time to show off my Fabulous Friday Finds...and personal favorites!

I purchased this North Face over-body sling bag while on vacation in Colorado!
It has a lot of pockets and compartments...perfect for hikes to carry your camera, snacks and a bottle of water. Also perfect as an every day purse!

I found this lip balm while looking for a special favor for a Bridal Luncheon I helped host for my cousin who just recently got married in Colorado (reason for my vacation in Colorado!) I wanted to find a yummy lip balm with an SPF for the intense Colorado sun (though lower temperatures and humidity, the higher altitude makes the sun more intense and we tend to ignore that fact!) I actually purchased the Sangria SPF lip balm...but for my Fabulous Friday Finds, I am showcasing another type found in her shop...
I am totally in love with this Pomegranate Lip Glacé.From Petite Threla's listing on Etsy: "Our Lip Glacés combine the emollient, protective properties of our lip balms with a tad more color and a softer texture. A few years ago, we finished up our Colorado vacation (see the trend here? This is a frequent family vacation spot every couple of years) with a visit to the Grand Lake Lodge (for more information on the Lodge, see this Blog Post: http://chloeboutique.blogspot.com/2010/08/featured-on-etsy-storque-blog.html ) We found this coffee on clearance and figured we'd try it! We got back home, brewed some fresh coffee and decided it was our favorite coffee, ever. Our parents were still up in Grand Lake and we called them, asking them if they could pick up more. To our dismay, it had sold out. Because the Lodge had closed (see previously mentioned blog post) we were not able to get this coffee for about 4 years!! This is why this coffee is a Fabulous Friday Find and Favorite!

Dinner Solution Thursday!

Need something quick and easy for dinner tonight??
Have an easy and VERY tasty one for you! Hubby and I had this Tuesday night!

Grilled Chicken Taco Pizza

Ingredients

For the Taco Seasoning:

2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon ground cumin
Kosher and freshly ground black pepper

For the Pizza:

1/4 cup canola oil, plus more for brushing
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 16-ounce tube pizza dough
All-purpose flour, for dusting
1 cup shredded mozzarella
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar

Directions:
Make the taco seasoning: Mix all of the ingredients with 1 tablespoon each salt and black pepper in a bowl.

Prepare the pizza: Mix 2 tablespoons of the taco seasoning and the canola oil in a shallow bowl. Pound the chicken between 2 pieces of plastic wrap to 1/4 inch thick. Add the chicken to the bowl, turning to coat, and marinate 30 minutes.

Preheat a grill to medium high. Grill the chicken until cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Let cool, then cut into bite-size pieces.

Divide the dough into 3 pieces. Roll out each on a floured surface into an 8-inch round. Brush with canola oil, sprinkle with taco seasoning and grill until crisp, 3 to 5 minutes per side; remove from the grill.

Mix the cheeses in a bowl, then sprinkle on the crusts and top with the chicken. Return the pizzas to the grill, and cook until the cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the avocado, lime juice, cumin, chili powder, red onion, and salt and pepper to taste. Top the pizzas with the avocado mixture, salsa, sour cream and cilantro.

Oh, and for you vegetarians out there, I'm sure it would be just as tasty minus the chicken...just add more veggies!

RAINFOREST Necklace Set: 2-Strand necklace and earrings made with two different cuts of blue green turquoise, faceted amethyst rondelles, square jasper squares, Bali silver daisy spacers, and sterling silver.

One of my Jewelry friends made a necklace very similar to this and I fell in love with it!! I wanted to recreate it myself...of course I threw in my own little details!
This necklace totally makes me think of a rainforest!! So crisp, and vibrant! I'm gonna let it sit in my shop for just a little longer and if it doesn't sell, I'm removing it and placing it in my personal jewelry box :)

Cindy has earned 6 cars with Mary Kay, but the Pink Cadillac still eludes her, and continues to be one of her biggest goals with the company. Her other goal is to obtain National Sales Director status!

Last month during our inaugural meeting, we set some goals to accomplish by the next meeting. For the most part, we've either accomplished these goals, or are on the way to having them accomplished real soon! Mostly our goals consisted of working on our blogs!! We will continue to work on our blogs, and other goals set!

~~Victoria continues to work toward earning money for her Thai Yoga training trip to Thailand in February 2011.

~~Olivia has been working on her wall-paper and painting projects, and will continue to do so!

~~Erin hopes to get her topics for tele/web-seminars lined out, and to sign up on www.freeconferencecall.com to get started! She's also set a goal to meet her Magazine (Panache) release deadline! And lastly, Erin is working on some fund-raising ideas for her charitable organization, Ouachita River Valley Animal League (ORVAL).

~~And, Amanda (me!) has been working very hard on keeping up her blog!! (check out my previous 3 weeks of blog posting!) She also wanted to work on a bridal jewelry portfolio and though not completed, she's gotten her pictures printed and is ready to make a folder!

Our "new" ladies have set some goals of their own and will be working on them over the next month. We can't wait to see how they go at the next meeting (TBA)!

~~Cindy is working on enlarging her network group and creating more leaders to move up in the company...Pink Caddy is in sight! She also wants to incorporate listing to her affirmations for her career, her spirituality and personal goals daily. She's been getting in shape and wants to continue her gym-routine!

~~Elisabeth wants to shed a few more pounds, and wants to bring more people into the program to help them! She also wants to get better organized...and clean off her desk!!

Etsy Storque Blog: Etsy Finds-Last Chance for Summer Whites

I LOVE Colorado, and very much welcomed the cooler temperatures and low humidity!

While relaxing and enjoying some much cooler temperatures, and more importantly, sharing in the joyous occasion of our cousin getting married, in the Colorado Mountains, I was featured in a prestigious article on Etsy!
After a long dry spell of having no sales since July 22, I all of a sudden found 8 sales in a single day!

Actually, the story of this is quite entertaining (to me anyway).

The Grand Lake Lodge is a historical site in Grand Lake (located in the southwest corner of the Rocky Mountain National Park), CO. It was also the spot for my bridal luncheon back in August 2004 just before my Hubby and I got married. Having been closed and on the market for sale by the James family for a couple of years, the Lodge has finally reopened, partially. It hasn't sold yet, but so many people expressed their sadness for it being closed that the James family thought it best to open it back up! The Lodge will be fully opened next summer.

Anyway, the Lodge has a very nice jewelry counter...full of amazing Native American made jewelry featuring turquoise, coral and silver. I had gone up to the Lodge just to look around since it had reopened (and to look for our most beloved coffee we've ever found...Front Porch Blend, made especially for Grand Lake Lodge) and I found this bracelet I just HAD to have. I don't buy a lot of jewelry since I am a jewelry artisan myself! But, I can't do this kind of work, I'll admit :)
It was a pricey piece. I walked away, thinking I would tell Hubby about the bracelet and hint around for a birthday present (so what that it would be almost 5 months early!) That afternoon while trying to take a cat nap, I couldn't stop thinking about this bracelet!! I finally gave up and decided to check my email. And, then right there, I see I have had 5 sales!!! And, like 15 minutes later, I see I had 3 more sales!! WOW!!! What is going on!!! I realize (or decide this is my best excuse) that the bracelet is meant for me to have!!!! LOL!

One of my friends whom I found on Etsy did some research for me when she saw all of the recent activity in my Etsy shop. I knew it had to be some kind of feature or something! There was no way I had 8 random sales in one day! I've NEVER had more than 3 sales in a single day!!! I found this yogurt at Whole Foods in Baton Rouge and though it's pricey, I fell in love and buy some every time I go!! It is made by Louisiana Chef John Folse his Bittersweet Plantation Dairy in Gonzales! Tahitian Vanilla is my fave...top with granola or Kashi Go Lean Crisp and it's a perfect and healthy breakfast!

I needed a new hair straightener and found this one by Revlon. I LOVE it!! It's super smooth to use, and even came with a heat-resistant cover!

SMOOTHERING Heat in the South...

Uh, my. It has been beyond HOT the last couple of weeks. Actually, this has been the hottest summer since I've lived in Louisiana...over 7 and a half years! I've never felt anything like this! Sure, we usually have a few weeks of temps topping the triple digits, but not this many days. We have been experiencing extreme heat and drought since mid May and there's no relief in sight.

Here is a map of current temperatures across the US...including the heat index which makes it feel so much hotter, and super muggy!

Oh, how I can't wait until next Wednesday as we jet-set across the country to northern Colorado for a week! Do you see that according to the map, Colorado is feeling around 84 degrees...with the heat index? And, this isn't going to be in Grand Lake, located in the southwest corner of the Rocky Mountain National Park...this is going to be eastern Colorado which is lower elevation.

We are going to be joining in the festivities and joy of our cousin who is about to tie the knot!! I am so ready for some Colorado cool air, and mountains! It will be nice to have a chill in the air and wear a sweater at night!

A typical splurge at "Bob's"...or Turquoise Coyote in Pontachoula, LA...

Located just north of New Orleans, Turquoise Coyote was originally known as a small antique shop. But Jewelry Artisans and Beaders alike know the real gems that lie in this tiny little nondescript building, situated in the historical district of the town!

While in Coastal Louisiana for Oil-Spill work, I made my way back through Pontachoula to pick up some supplies for upcoming events in which Chloe Boutique will be participating! First, Little Green Boutique (Monroe's only Eco-Friendly Boutique and Salon) will be hosting a "Fleur de Lis Jewelry Making Party" where guests will be able to create their own necklaces and/or bracelets using freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals and a variety of Fleur de Lis charms!

Chloe Boutique will also be at the Holiday Home and Gift Show at the West Monroe Convention Center on October 9 and 10 and the Herbal Harvest and Craft Show at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in West Monroe on October 23!

"Cocktails & Canvas"

What a fun night! I've never been to a "Cocktails & Canvas" event and have been wanting to go to one so when my friend Erin asked me to go I said YES!

It is what it is...you paint while drinking :)

I think we did pretty good for our FIRST painting (neither of us are painters and this was our first attempt). What do you think??

Networking & Mastermind Meeting!

A small group of "creative women" got together for dinner, drinks and networking at Bayou Bistro last night. The meeting/group was organized by Erin Love of Panache. Her goal for the group is to bring women entrepreneurs together to help spread inspiration, ideas and help each other reach personal and professional goals for a successful life!
Our first meeting allowed us to "meet and greet" by sharing information about what we do, what we enjoy, and what goals we would like to accomplish by the next meeting, set for August 18th.

~~Victoria is a Massage Therapist and is currently going to school to be an Esthetician. In her spare time she also represents Scentsy, a "wickless candle" company in which I originally discovered from a friend in Meridian, Idaho, where the company is based. I'm excited about having a local rep. to purchase from!
She likes to describe herself as a "Hippie" in that she enjoys natural beauty. She is interested in textural painting, and her most exciting adventure is Thai-Yoga...she's selling Scentsy to help pay for training in Thailand in February 2011!!

~~Lisa is a super busy girl! She's a Professional Photographer and Graphic Designer, and a SAHM to a 5 month old! She also just recently became a consultant for Premier Jewelry, a home-based jewelry sales company. What sets her apart from other Premier Jewelry consultants is that she likes to pair current jewelry in the catalog with outfits! She encourages guests to bring along outfits in which they need accessories to better help them pick out jewelry!
As a Graphic Designer, she is behind the scenes of a local cookie company's fund-raising brochures in which she personally designs!
She really loves designing party invitations, especially for baby showers and kid parties!

Her current endeavor is to remove some old wallpaper in her house and do lots of painting!

Snow in Louisiana -- 2010

You know what they've been saying about the Saints winning the Superbowl...

We had a "Blizzard" on Thursday/Friday, February 11/12! Reported that 5-6 inches of the fluffy white stuff was on the ground!

Chloe wasn't sure what to think at first glance. She didn't want to go off of the porch! After she finally braved the carpet of snow, it was tough to get her inside! She'd run, and spin circles, throwing snow in the air and chasing "snow balls" that she kicked up!!! Had a blast I think :)

Amethyst...and My Favorite Color!

February Birthstone unraveled...

Its color is as unique as it is seductive, though in fact this gemstone of all gemstones is said to protect its wearer against seduction. The amethyst is extravagance in violet. For many thousands of years, the most striking representative of the quartz family has been a jewel coveted by princes both ecclesiastical and secular. Moses described it as a symbol of the Spirit of God in the official robes of the High Priest of the Jews, and the Russian Empress Catherine the Great sent thousands of miners into the Urals to look for it. In popular belief, the amethyst offers protection against drunkenness - for the Greek words 'amethystos' mean 'not intoxicated' in translation. A more apt stone for the month of February, particularly if there is to be plenty going on in the way of carnival celebrations, could thus hardly be wished for.

The deposits with the greatest economic significance are in various states in southern Brazil and in neighboring Uruguay. The third major export country is Madagascar. However, this gemstone is spread all over the world. Good specimens were found in Aztec graves, though the deposits from which they were extracted are no longer known today. On the Canadian side of Lake Superior in North America, there is a place named Amethyst Harbor. The violet quartz is found there in ample quantities, though rarely in gemstone quality.

However, the amethyst is more likely to turn up in spaces lining agate almonds and druses in igneous rocks. What was presumed to be the largest-ever cavity was discovered in 1900 in Rio Grande do Sul. The almond measured ten by five by three meters (33 by 16 by 10 ft.) and weighed an estimated eight tonnes. The dark violet amethysts, some as large as a man's fist, may have weighed some 700 cwt. altogether. There is a piece weighing 200 kilograms, taken from this Brazilian treasure, in the Washington Museum. In recent times, a find in the USA has been making headlines. In July 1993, a three-meter druse was found in Maine, which contained well over 1000 kilograms of cuttable amethyst, some of it in crystals 19 cm in length.

February's purple birthstone has been found among the possessions of royalty throughout the ages. The intense violet hue of Amethyst appealed to early monarchs, perhaps because they often wore this color. Purple dye was scarce and expensive at one time, and so it was reserved for the garments of kings and queens. Amethyst has been found in ruins dating as far back as the ninth century, adorning crowns, scepters, jewelry, and breastplates worn into battle. A large Amethyst is among the closely guarded gemstones in the British Crown Jewels.

Amethyst is also symbolic of spirituality and piety. It has been used to ornament churches and crosses used in religious ceremony, and worn in rings and on rosaries by bishops and priests.

The gift of Amethyst is symbolic of protection and the power to overcome difficulty. It is said to strengthen the bond in a love relationship, so it is an ideal anniversary or engagement gem. Whether or not Amethyst holds such power, it's stunning beauty will certainly make anyone who wears it feel like royalty! First Artisan Feature Spotlight #2 of 2010 - Splendiferous Fiber

"Icy Trees Square Hand-painted Silk Scarf"

Wendy is the owner and talented artisan of Splendiferous Fiber ~ Wearable Art and Accessories. She has been creating for as long as she can remember, even earning sewing and dress-making badges in the Girl Scouts (a few years ago she says)!

Wendy creates the most beautiful hand-painted and hand-dyed scarves, and beaded mini-bags/purses, totes. She says she gets most of her inspiration from her natural surroundings, and also from her personal photography. She is also inspired by the fabrics and materials that she uses.

"When painting and dying, there are always elements of chance", says Wendy, "once the paint has dried or the dye has batched, you see your work for the first time and it's always like opening a surprise gift!" This, she says, is her favorite thing about what she does. She also likes seeing her projects come together as she assembles them.

When asked what her biggest challenge is as an artist, she simply says TIME; a common challenge for most artisans. Wendy says, "I finally have two consecutive days that allow me enough time to dye and rinse some rainbow scarves!" When she finds some EXTRA time, she'd like to better her skills at free-motion quilting and also get into making fused glass. However, she says she might have to have her house re-wired, and not having enough space doesn't allow for another craft right now!

Wendy's favorite item she's created is a rainbow velvet scarf. "I wear it all of the time. It's great advertising and I've gotten commission work from it", says Wendy. When asked to give other sellers a piece of advice, she simply says, "find something unique to create."

Some other interesting information about Wendy: She is a fiber artist, and she has won several awards (you can find more information on her Fotki site regarding these awards). She has an art quilt that was juried into the new book, 500 Art Quilts, which will be in bookstores in March! Be on the lookout for that! She has two pieces in a fiber show at Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge which can be seen through February 7th, in addition to other shows around the country (see her Blog for more information). Wendy also designs and sews costumes for the local youth ballet. Wow, no wonder she has very limited time!

Something that many people don't know about Wendy is that she holds a BFA and an MA. She also studied Russian in high school when everyone else took up Spanish or French! However, she says she only remembers a few phrases now!
